For many years now the fast fashion industry has been rampant in producing a constant stream of clothing styles and options. It’s obvious that these companies have taken the traditional 4 season cycle of the early 2000s and replaced it with non stop year long production of ‘trendy’ clothing. Meanwhile, on the other side of the industry lies the companies that are taking the necessary steps to make a change to the fashion industry. The recent backlash against companies like Reformation and Everlane inspired me to pull together a list of sustainable companies who offer great products and have a truly clean supply chain.
H&M ‘Conscious’: Everyday
This is probably one of the last stores I ever thought I’d include in a clothing list like this, but over the past couple of years H&M has taken the initiative to start a brand within the company that focuses on using sustainable and organic materials in their apparel. I shopped from this brand when it first started, and looking at it today I never expected it to grow into this. Not only is it one of the most affordable sustainable options available, it also has a vast range for women, including maternity and plus size.
Cuyana: Workplace
Cuyana is a new company to me, but they are a company that has shown they really embrace being ethical in all aspects of production. They put out a minimal amount of clothing per year and focus on timeless pieces with the intent on keeping a ‘lean closet’. They have a very minimalistic aesthetic, which is great for business casual in the office place or great basics for your closest.
Aerie: Swimsuits
I know summer is almost over, but if you’re still looking for a nice affordable suit Aerie is the place for you. They have a great collection of pieces labeled ‘Real Good’, making it easier for consumers to spot the recycled nylon pieces under their swimsuit section. Not only is the collection vast it is also size inclusive, offering sizes up to XXS-XXL and tall options as well.
Stella McCartney: Bags
As you start your journey into sustainable fashion, depending on your budget, Stella McCartney probably isn’t the first place you look at. They are ultimately known for being the only luxury brand that uses sustainable practices with all of their products, and their most ethical line to date is their collaboration with Adidas, which is still shoppable now on their site. If you’re ever on the market for a good quality vegan leather handbag, Stella Mccartney will have you covered.
Veja: Sneakers
Another favorite of mine that I keep running into is Veja sneakers. When I think of sneakers that are truly timeless yet still meet the trends we want today I think of Veja, specifically their 'Esplar Leather White' style. They offer shoes for men, women, and children ranging from casual to running sneakers as well.
