Diversifying The Fashion Portfolio

The upfront answer is yes it can, which leads us to question why is it so slow to see the change on the runway. For the past month, we've seen countless models strut down runways around the world, but only a few shows stood out in having true diversity of not only race but body and ability as well. With NY, London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Week at an end it's time to discuss the designers that are changing the luxury fashion industry to meet the global audience.

Tommy Hilfiger: Despite the elements, his Fall 2022 RTW collection was hosted in Brooklyn's Drive-In Theater. With over 80 looks presented, it boasted the "See Now, Buy Now" collections with a range of models.

BOSS: A futuristic blend of textiles with traditional silhouettes. Hosted in Milan, this show was star-studded and viewers could shop their Fall 2022 RTW live on TikTok as well.

Karoline Vitto: A smaller made-to-order brand, this subversive brand prides itself on 'celebrating the 'curves and accentuating the folds', centering designs on the human body. Her London Fashion Week debut was a hit, garnering thousands of eyes over social media. I am personally very excited about where this brand takes its ingenuity.

These designers have taken the first step in showing change is possible for our industry. With trends returning to the skinny heroin chic of the 2000s, it is even more important to show acceptance within the community. Fashion is a trickle-down industry and unfortunately, most of society still bases people's beauty on their bodies, especially women, so showing different bodies is no longer a preference but a requirement to remind society to grasp reality again. We owe it to each other to embrace our contrasts on these runways, because what is the fashion industry if we're not uplifting each other's uniqueness?
